I HAVE TO GET IN SHAPE TO START:
This is the number one way to shoot yourself in the foot. What people don’t realize is that CrossFit is highly scalable. In fact the majority of our members will scale workouts on a daily basis. This is one of the major benefits of having a coach at each class. The coach will scale the workout to appropriately fit your needs. There is never a perfect time to start; you just have to begin and keep showing up. Your fitness will come ten times faster than if you try to do it on your own. I promise!
MEMBERSHIP IS TOO PRICEY:
For someone looking in from the outside, membership can seem expensive. Your local “globo gym” is cheaper, but what good is it if you are not seeing any results, or even using it for that matter? CrossFit gyms take the guesswork out of the equation. All you have to do is show up. The coach teaching the class will guide you through a warm-up specific to the workout and make sure all movements are explained along with scaling options for beginner to the advanced athlete. The cost is in the high level of coaching you get to make sure you are moving safely and efficiently. CrossFit offers the programming and individual attention to make sure you reach your goals. By showing up at least three times a week you are guaranteed results. Northstate CrossFit also programs extra optional work and mobility in addition to the daily workout.
IM AFRAID OF GETTING HURT OR I HAVE AN INJURY ALREADY:
As coaches our number one goal is your safety. In order to move safely, good technique must be coached and used. Good mechanics is the best way to prevent injury. Weight and speed come only after proficiency of movement. But with any activity there is always a chance for injury. At what cost do we stop moving though? Of course there is less risk of injury sitting on the couch but our health will deteriorate faster and quality of life will inevitably go down. Lastly, preexisting injuries are something coaches can work around. The scalability of CrossFit allows us to program several different variations to work around an injury and to keep you safe.
ALL CROSSFIT GYMS ARE THE SAME:
CrossFit is not a franchise. We are affiliate owners with the right to use the CrossFit name. All gyms are independently owned and are free to be run as we see fit. With that said it is important to check out all the gyms in your area because every gym has a different vibe. When it comes to programming, cost, and community, gyms can vary greatly. Some things to ask for when looking for a gym to join are how long they have been in business, what experience do the coaches have and who is the person programming for the gym specifically.
IM AFRAID OF GETTING TO BULKY:
This one is mainly for the ladies. As a woman trainer I hear this one the most. If you look at women in the gym you will see that they aren’t bulky, they’re fit. What women don’t realize is that it is actually really hard to get “big”. We don’t have the same hormones as men and if you do see a jacked woman they are most likely taking something extra on the side to get that way. Secondly, most women just don’t have the genetics to put on substantial muscle. You could workout twice a day for years and never look like the ripped girls at The CrossFit Games. It actually makes me said that women want to stay away from lifting weight in fear of muscle gain. Being strong brings so much confidence and is extremely healthy for us.
